[214] “生产跑步机”与“消费跑步机”是施奈博格(Alan Schnaiberg)等人提出,其中“生产跑步机”讲的是不同的生产竞争者之间为了获取利益,不断增加产品产量,导致产品价格下降,为了获取利益总是倾向于增加产量和排斥环境,形成共同经济制约。“消费跑步机”讲的是消费者欲壑难填,永远不能更加满意,尽管消费的物品愈来愈多,这种不断增加的物质消费量却未能带来任何内心满足感的消费过程。同时,生产跑步机与消费跑步机也发生着相互之间的交流。其中一个跑步机的速度增加,将会带动另外一个跑步机的加速。但在另一方面,对一个跑步机速度增加的期望,也会部分地依赖于另外一个跑步机所创造的社会条件。
